The Cleveland Cavaliers were on the verge of being a very good team; then they traded for Donovan Mitchell.
And while it didn’t work out in the playoffs, just having him there instantly raised their ceiling exponentially.
A year has gone by, and while Evan Mobley and Darius Garland have taken big steps forward, Mitchell continues to lead the way.
That’s why Cavs insider Hayden Grove believes the team should focus all their efforts on building around Mitchell, not Garland or Mobley.
Hot take that I’m gonna get yelled at for:
Donovan Mitchell is THE guy for Cleveland.
He’s better than Mobley will ever be. He’s better than Garland will ever be. He’s the alpha.
If they can’t keep him— or make a really, really, really good trade— this is what the Cavs are.

He stated that he was the alpha and that he was just better than both players would ever be, even if he wasn’t homegrown like the others.
Truth be told, that’s far from a hot take; it’s just a fact.
However, there’s just one big problem with that.
Mitchell has been non-committal about his future with the organization.
He didn’t sign a contract extension because it didn’t make sense for him financially, and he hasn’t openly talked about extending his stay in The Land beyond his current deal.
It’s well known that Mitchell wants to pursue an NBA championship, and that’s just not this team’s reality right now.
Of course, the front office needs to put all their chips on the table to try and get better and convince him that Cleveland is the place to stay.
But if that fails, they cannot overlook and just move on from their current homegrown players.
In reality, a team will only be as good as its core, and there’s no reason to choose one player over the other at this point.
